
The Mount Isa Volatile Substance Misuse Initiative "Place of Safety" provides support and assistance to young people aged 12 to 17 years, who engage or are at risk of engaging in volatile substances i.e. Alcohol, Cannabis, Petrol/Glue/Deodorant sniffing . The program aims to reduce the incidence and extent of harm associated with volatile substance misuse in the community and provides a range of interventions to address volatile substance misuse amongst young people in Mount Isa.
The VSM service provides five components of support whilst focusing service delivery towards early intervention and prevention and community engagement.
OUTREACH
A coordinated team taking safety to young people, targeting ‘hot spots’ of Mt Isa and assist young people to prevent them engaging in volatile substance misuse.
DIVERSIONARY ACTIVITIES
Sporting and Recreational activities are developed for positive community engagement of young people in the aim of deterring substance misuse and or other risk taking behaviors.
CASUAL CLIENTS ‘DROP IN’ SERVICE
Monday—Friday mornings 8.30am til 10am and afternoons 3pm—5pm. Weekends 10am-6pm. Drop In Centre located at 11 Fourth Avenue. Young people can access nutritional food, laundry/bathroom amenities, safe supervised space and engage in recreational and leisure activities.
REST & RECOVERY
A safe, supervised environment for young people to recover from the effects of substance misuse whilst receiving medical health checks and the option of overnight stay.
PLANNED SUPPORT
Offering a coordinated approach to address issues behind young people’s substance misuse including family support, assistance with accessing detox clinics, referrals to medical services, case management of issues and needs and access to other programs locally/regionally.
